Why We Exist: Craft as a Way Out of Poverty
Ceramic London began with a simple conviction — that a skilled pair of hands deserves a fair day’s pay, and that beautiful objects can change lives.
Ceramic London is a craft studio with a purpose: we train people facing hardship in the art of pottery, then employ them at a fair wage. Every piece you buy funds that mission.
We believe talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. In the communities we work with, capable people are shut out of steady, dignified work by poverty and circumstance. We exist to open a door — by teaching a craft that turns patience and care into a lasting livelihood.
Anyone willing to learn is welcome — no experience needed, and no questions about the past.
Months of hands-on apprenticeship in throwing, glazing and firing — fully paid, so learning never means going hungry.
Each person is matched to the part of the craft they excel at, from the wheel to glazing to the kiln.
Graduates become salaried makers with steady hours and a fair, rising wage — real work that lasts.
The poorest people can rarely afford the time it takes to learn a trade. So we remove that barrier: trainees earn a fair wage while they learn, beside an experienced maker, until they’re ready to take their place on the studio floor.

Step inside
Ceramic London began with a simple conviction — that a skilled pair of hands deserves a fair day’s pay, and that beautiful objects can change lives.
Talent is spread evenly across the world. Opportunity is not. We work where the gap between the two is widest.
Nobody arrives knowing how to throw a pot. We teach from the very first lump of clay — and we pay people while they learn.
Training is only worth something if a real job waits at the end of it. For us, it always does.
We pay our makers properly — not the least we can get away with, but a wage that lets a family plan for the future.
A clear, honest breakdown of where the money goes when you buy a piece from us.
Wheels turning, kilns humming, and the steady focus of people who love what they do. A day in the life of our studio.
Trust is earned with openness. Here’s how we stay accountable to you and to our makers.
Buying a single mug already changes a life. But there are other ways to stand with our makers, too.
The standards we hold ourselves to — for the people who make our ceramics, and the people who buy them.
Choose a handmade piece and fund a fairer future for the maker who shaped it. That is the whole idea.
